## Understanding the Elements of Editing

Editing is the bread and butter of photographers. All good photographers are master manipulators. In addition, the effects of light and the photographer’s handling of the camera’s controls create images that are more than just snapshots. (See Book I, Chapter 3, for the details on photography.)

Because images are composed of light, color, and detail, _painting_ is a better choice of word than _editing._ A photographer is a painter who paints with light, color, and detail.

This guide will guide you through the basics of how to use Photoshop Elements to edit images.

1. Open Image With a Program

Open a graphic file you wish to edit into Photoshop Elements using the File > Open or Ctrl+O function. This will bring up the Open dialog box. Click the Open button.

A new file is opened into Photoshop Elements. However, it is a.PSD file, which many graphic editor programs are not compatible with. Your software may save this image in a default format like.PNG or.JPG. In this case, you can use a graphic editor that is compatible with.PSD format to convert the file to a different format, like.JPG.

2. Load the Image Into Photoshop Elements

After opening the image, move the image to the Photoshop Elements workspace by dragging the image to the workspace pane at the top of the screen.

3. Setting Up the Workspace

The workspace allows you to organize your Photoshop Elements workspace. Once you have set up the workspace, your work space will be organized into different layers. Create new layers for different parts of your image. The classic layering method is the “Layer Masks” tool. There is also a “Paths” tool that can be used to create a series of shapes.

There are four main parts to the workspace. The top window shows you the image you are working on, the next two lower windows shows the Layers panels. The bottom window shows the image you are working on and the different layers you have created.

4. Load Layers

Right-click on the thumbnail of the image in the workspace and select “Load Layer.” This will bring up the Layers panel.

5. Set Layer Order and Insert Layer

If you are unfamiliar with Photoshop, you may want to view these tutorials to know how to set layer order, insert layer, and lock/unlock layers.

After you have loaded a layer, you can move the layer up, down, and to the front or back. Go into the top left pane of the Layers panel to see the hierarchy of all the layers. Click the layer thumbnail to highlight it and you will see a down arrow and a number next to it. Click that down arrow to bring up an list of all the items above the current layer. When you hover over a layer thumbnail, it will show you

Paths allow you to draw a vector image, like a square, oval, or line. You can also use paths to work with masks, shapes, and other elements.

off the top of the latte foam.

I’ve been thinking lately about a quilt or two. What started as a “for keeps” pile of fabrics for a friend has grown into my own quilt to be. It started with asking different questions to the fabric and decided to see where it might take me.

Here’s a first draft. It’s just a square with a quilting motif. I wanted to make a quilt that’s just enough to use on a casual bed, but there’s more to the story – time will tell.

My thoughts are that we’ve been seeing some of this winter’s warming winter temperatures so far, and I’m predicting that the spring may start before long. It’s not hard to envision long skirts and shorts, sandals and open toed shoes, and spring cleaning.

I hope you enjoy this post, and I’m looking forward to sharing with you soon what I’m working on, and the latest news from our home. Until then, take care and enjoy the weather!

I’ve been a little off with my blog posts and I don’t know why. It happens every once in a while, and I get caught up in work and things around here. Hopefully I’ll start writing again soon.

I’m sharing a few of my favorite items that I received this Christmas. These are some of the beads, charms and wooden spools that I received.

There are a couple of things that I love about these beads. I love that they are in natural colors with no color contrast. They are also brushed and shaped nicely. The beads make nice earrings and necklaces and they also do good for the collection of vessels and wood as well. I love that this little ball of beads contains a zipper!

This little charm bracelet is the absolute best present I’ve ever received. It is made of wood spools and beads and they look great together. We call her “the beader” and it was my first stone bead making project. We are planning on using one of these for making a necklace, too.

I love how this little charm bracelet looks with the little charms.

This may be my favorite bit of the wood beads. Wood spools work well for jewelry because you can shape them into any shape you like, and wood beads make nice necklace pieces. I can imagine making a necklace with these charms, too. I think I’ll be
