Pediatric trauma victims have the highest risk of morbidity and mortality in comparison with their adult counterparts. Interdisciplinary management of the injured pediatric patient leads to a beneficial outcome in terms of reduced mortality and morbidity. Management strategies include optimized prehospital and in-hospital care, as well as dedicated hospital postoperative care. Anaesthesia management is one of the major elements of prehospital and in-hospital trauma care. The anaesthetist has a critical role in optimizing outcome of the injured pediatric patient. In this review we discuss the basic principles of prehospital anaesthesia management for the injured pediatric patient, and we outline potential role of this specialty in the high-risk patient.Promoting collaboration between obstetrics and maternal fetal medicine.

According to initial findings, 10 out of 68 siblings with hereditary epidermolytic palmoplantar keratoderma had cutaneous findings similar to those of Hailey–Hailey disease.^[@r1]^ Additional cases with heritable palmoplantar keratoderma associated with Hailey–Hailey disease have since been reported.^[@r2]–[@r7]^ This may be explained by the existence of a disease locus on chromosome 12q21-24.^[@r8],[@r9]^

We report a patient with palmoplantar keratoderma associated with Hailey–Hailey disease, which was misdiagnosed as idiopathic keratoderma.

A 54-year-old woman presented with the typical physical characteristics of Hailey–Hailey disease, including the eruption of hyperkeratotic papules, thick, greasy palms and soles that stained the skin when she was washing them. The patient had no familial history of Hailey–Hailey disease. On her right hand, there were hundreds of hyperkeratotic keratotic papules, four to eight mm in diameter. These hyperkeratotic keratotic papules were present on both palms and soles. We performed a biopsy of the lesion on her right hand, but the histology was inconclusive, as it demonstrated neither hyperkeratosis nor parakeratosis. She had a two-week history of repeated episodes of painful pruritus, and was referred to our dermatology department. On physical examination, the patient’s family pedigree was typical of Hailey–Hailey disease ([Fig 1](#f1){ref-type=”fig”}). She also had a hyperkeratotic papule on her left knee. We performed a biopsy of the lesion and found that this papule was also typical of Hailey–Hailey disease ([Fig 2](#f2){ref-type=”fig”}).

According to her family history and the patient’s typical physical characteristics, we made a diagnosis of Hailey–Hailey disease and referred her to our dermatology department. She had been previously diagnosed with idiopathic
